Why is the PTA necessary?
While public education in the United States is technically “free,” it cannot thrive without the dedicated support of families, teachers, and community members. Our educational system depends significantly on volunteers and financial contributions from parents and community members. Without the PTA, our school would lack essential resources like books, supplies, fine arts programs, art teachers, science labs, spelling bees, and curriculum support for teachers—many of which are used daily by students. In short, our school would look and feel very different without the PTA’s involvement.
Why should I join?
Joining the PTA benefits your child significantly. Research indicates that students excel when their families are involved both at home and at school. Being active in the PTA is also a great way to connect with teachers, staff, and other parents. Your support helps fund our annual events, directly benefiting your child.
As a member, you’ll enjoy several perks, including access to the online Sunny Hills student directory, emergency shelter supplies for your child, and discounts at local, state, and national businesses.
Additionally, part of your membership fee supports the state and national PTA, which plays a crucial role in advocating for our children at the government level.
I joined last year – do I need to join again?
Yes, all parents and teachers/staff need to renew their membership each year, as our PTA programs operate on an annual basis.
Does joining mean I’m required to volunteer or attend meetings?
No, joining the PTA does not obligate you to do anything beyond being a member. There’s no requirement to donate, volunteer, or attend meetings, though we always welcome your help and input.
Volunteering with the PTA is a great way to connect with teachers, staff, and other parents. There are various ways to contribute—volunteering doesn’t have to be during the day or in the classroom. You can help by making copies, completing tasks at home for teachers, or assisting with evening events, among other opportunities.
What if I’ve already joined PTA at my other child’s school? Do I need to join twice?
Each school operates its PTA independently, so it's important to join the PTA at each school your children attend. This ensures you have a voice and can participate in the activities and decisions at each individual school.
I already have a PTA login ID – have I joined?
While your PTA login ID remains the same each year, you still need to renew your PTA membership annually.
Why do I need to pay to renew?
Our membership dues cover the costs of the Washington State and National PTA and help offset some administrative expenses. PTA programs at Sunny Hills are funded through fundraising efforts, not through membership dues.
What if the cost to join/renew is outside my budget?
If joining the PTA presents a financial challenge, we can offer assistance. Please contact our Membership Director for assistance. All inquiries are kept confidential.
I already donated or plan to donate to the fundraiser – is this the same as joining PTA?
First, thank you for your support! Our yearly fundraisers are separate from membership dues and serve as the primary source of funding for all our programs. We ask that each family purchase a PTA membership and contribute to the fundraiser as much as their resources allow.
