After you meet your teacher, come enjoy a yummy treat at the Meet The Teacher PTA Sponsored Social! This is a fun event that encourages families to gather and socialize with one another prior to school starting. This is a great opportunity to meet the PTA Board members, preview Mustang Spirit Wear, and learn more about the PTA without feeling intimidated. Different displays will also be made available to inform the community of what the PTA does and what upcoming programs and fundraisers we have!

An annual family fun event where everyone is welcome to learn and celebrate the various cultures that make up our school's community. Get involved by either: 1) visiting a table, 2) hosting a table that showcases your family's heritage, or 3) volunteering to help run the event. Our goal with this event is to make every child feel proud of their heritage!

This fun family event is an annual tradition at Sunny Hills where students will be provided with sweet treats while playing Bingo. The Sunny Hills staff call the Bingo numbers and prizes are awarded to students with the winning numbers. The chair and committee of this program oversee the planning and coordination of details for this fun community-building experience.
Popcorn Friday

On the last Friday of each month, the smell of delicious popcorn is in the air! Students can enjoy free popcorn together at recess, so just "pop" on over to the PTA popcorn room and enjoy a bag. The popcorn chairs are responsible for making popcorn for students during second recess on the last Friday of each month. The chairs of this program are responsible for coordinating parent volunteers. They are also responsible for ordering the popcorn, preparing and communicating the schedule, and training the committee.

Sunny Hills PTA is proud to present an art instructional program that is designed to teach kids the fundamentals of art theory, history and creation. This program exposes students to a variety of media types, art elements, design principles and historic contexts. The success of this program depends on parent volunteer support. Announcements for volunteer sign-up will be posted throughout the year.

The objective of this voluntary program is to foster a love of reading. Students earn prizes as they read outside class time and record their reading minutes online. A parent volunteer is needed from each classroom to review the logs and award the prizes. The chairperson oversees classroom volunteer tallying, weekly prize distribution and communications. Classroom volunteers sign up at the classroom level.
Gift-a-Book

The objective of this committee is to help build pride in our school’s library with new books that foster a love of reading. Parents may purchase books year-round that will be donated to the library in their child’s name. The chairperson is responsible for creating personalized labels that honor student donors. Each label will be placed inside a new book chosen by the school's librarian and presented to the student donor during class time. Every book gifted leaves a legacy for future generations of Sunny Hills students.

The Washington State PTA, in partnership with the National PTA, sponsors a state wide arts education contest in the fall known as the Reflections Program. Each year there is a different theme for the program, and this information is available on the WA State PTA website, www.wastatepta.org. The student art entries will be judged at the school (Sunny Hills), council (Issaquah School District) and Washington State PTA levels. The State PTA winners are entered into the National PTA contest. The chairperson promotes and organizes the program in conjunction with the State PTA.

Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee Contest is the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion contest that encourages children to: appreciate the art of spelling, broaden vocabulary, and increase knowledge of the English language. With the help of parent volunteers, Sunny Hills students have been able to annually participate in this program. The winner of the Sunny Hills Elementary School competition will have the opportunity to compete in the Regional Bee at Seattle's Town Hall.

PTA eBlasts are periodic graphic emails sent to all PTA members with important information about school events. The chair person for this role will coordinate with other chairs to publish key messages and design graphics that effectively convey school communications.

The chairperson refreshes and maintains the PTA bulletin boards located in front of the office. This person will be in charge of putting up and taking down fliers and displays in a timely fashion, and making sure that all committees get equal access to the board. In addition, they will assist the front office with the portions of the board devoted to school and community news.

Proud parents of 5th grade graduates have the opportunity to purchase personalized yard/window signs with their graduate's name. Proceeds from these signs will benefit programs and events that are sponsored by the PTA. Volunteers may be needed to help distribute signs once received from the manufacturer.

Every Wednesday is Spirit Wear day – you can wear the school colors (blue and yellow) or a cool shirt with our logo! Clothing and accessories can be purchased online by students, parents and staff to raise money for PTA sponsored programs. Mustang Spirit Wear is sold in the Fall and again in January. The chair for Mustang Spirit Wear helps coordinate the products for ordering and works with a local vendor for ordering and screen printing needs. Online ordering and deadlines are provided and advertised when orders are being taken, so keep an eye out for information in the eNews!

The Scholastic Book Fair takes place in the fall and spring each year. Students and parents can shop and purchase books at the fair, with proceeds benefiting our PTA-sponsored programs. Being active on the PTA is also a fantastic way to get to know teachers, staff, and other parents. Our events are funded annually, so your child will directly benefit from your support.

Part of your membership fee is also directed to the state and national PTA which is the main source of advocacy at the government level for our children.

This committee produces an annual Sunny Hills yearbook, which is available for purchase by students and staff. The chairs and committee work to plan and design the yearbook. The yearbook features every class, specialist, and school group. It also highlights other activities that occur during the school year. Yearbooks are distributed in June.

Would you like to help PTA on an as-needed basis? Being a general volunteer is a flexible way for working parents to have the opportunity to help out with family and student events. Notifications for volunteer help will be sent out to parents via PTA communications.

Enrichment Grants

Each year, the Sunny Hills PTA accepts grant applications that benefit our school. The Enrichment Grant Committee then determine which grant applications to fund. This committee is chaired by the Vice President. A committee of 5-7 PTA members, balanced by grade levels (K-5), is formed to review and weigh all the grant applications based on the grant criteria. The committee chair presents a recommendation report to the Board, at which time the Board votes whether to approve the grant recommendations. This committee's work is in the fall. Enrichment grants allow teachers to buy classroom supplies, teaching tools, and invite speakers/presenters to teach specialized lessons to the kids.

The Budget Planning Committee will meet in April/May to provide a proposed budget for the upcoming school year to be voted on at a General Membership Meeting late spring. This budget will go into effect on July 1 and will allow the PTA to conduct business over the summer. Members of this committee may include outgoing and incoming Treasurers and incoming elected officers.

At least one financial review and audit will be performed at the end of the school year to encompass the fiscal year of July 1 to June 30. The Executive Committee may also decide that an audit is necessary mid-year or in the case of a change of Treasurer. The same audit team can perform both audits.

Golden Acorn, Outstanding Advocate and Outstanding Educator Awards are presented to extraordinary volunteers annually. The Awards committee is charged with soliciting from the school community the names of individuals who have contributed to improving our school and community at large. The committee will score all nominees on a rubric per Washington State PTA Policies, then present the winners with a gift of appreciation and share their contributions with the membership during a Spring general membership meeting.

Issaquah School District (ISD) runs a Family and Community Engagement (FACE) team that helps families navigate the school system. At Sunny Hills, the PTA FACE chairperson serves as the liaison between the district and Sunny Hill's community by communicating announcements about events and services hosted by ISD.

The Issaquah Schools Foundation is a non-profit organization that drives resources to help all students reach the promise of their academic potential. We do this by bridging the gap between funds the state provides for basic education and the dollars our schools need to prepare students for success in school and life. The ISF Liaison helps to communicate information from ISF back to the Sunny Hills PTA Board and community.

Dine with Sunny Hills is a program that supports our school and builds community by creating partnerships with local restaurants. Quarterly, Sunny Hills will partner with local restaurants and earn up to 20% of food and beverage sales sold on the event night. PTA communications about dining opportunities will be distributed throughout the school year.

Does your employer participate in a matching gift program? If so, please help the PTA benefit! Simply ask your human resource department for information and fill out the proper forms. This chairperson processes matching funds forms, reconciles funds received, and maintains database of parents that work at companies that provide matching funds. The chairperson also encourages matching funds for large fundraisers such as the Fall Fun Run.

The goal of the Sunny Hills Holiday Gift Program is to help Issaquah families in need while demonstrating to Sunny Hills students the importance of charitable giving. The program helps fill the Issaquah Food Bank's holiday shopping center for participating Issaquah School District children ages birth - 18. The program begins before Thanksgiving and runs for about two weeks.

This committee is responsible for promoting and collecting food donations for distribution to local needy families. Each classroom has a basket/box to collect donations. Money donations will be used by the Food Bank to purchase perishable items and turkeys. (Please make checks payable to Issaquah Food Bank.)

These fun summer play groups are for incoming Kindergarteners, allowing children and parents to connect prior to attending school. Play groups will be planned at Sunny Hills' playground as well as other local area parks. We hope seeing some familiar faces on the first day of school will ease any anxiety for kindergarteners and parents too!

This chair position oversees our school's Lost and Found, which has limited space. Items are collected and kept in the MPR. Newsletter announcements will be made reminding parents to check Lost & Found. Periodically, items will be donated to the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank or another designated charity. Before this is done, parents will get another newsletter notification announcing the date of donation.

Every year, Ellipsis Academy produces and holds a national math tournament called Math Challenge Tournament (MCT). This tournament is open to Grade 2 – 6 students in all 50 states. Sunny Hills students are encouraged to participate and develop their interest in math.

The Emergency Preparedness Chair is responsible for organizing and maintaining the shelter supplies provided by the PTA under this program (water, emergency blankets, emergency glow sticks and first aid kits). Committee members assist in purchasing supplies and restocking kits as needed. They also assist any teacher in need of extra personal emergency kits that they may be missing in the classroom (the PTA cannot garantee that the snacks supplied will be nut free).

The Issaquah School District nurses perform vision and hearing testing, as well as head lice checks for all Sunny Hills students on a yearly basis. This chairperson is responsible for acting as liaison to Sunny Hills' nurse, soliciting and scheduling volunteers and securing refreshments. A total of 40 volunteers (20 during the AM time slot and 20 during the PM time slot) are needed for this large undertaking and they will be trained to work immediately prior to their shift. Because this process is very focused and busy, volunteers are asked to not bring preschoolers along.
